Before Starting Electrolysis
- Stop removing your hair with the following methods: Avoid tweezing, waxing, sugaring, threading, and depilatories like Nair or Veet. These are all counterproductive to electrolysis. If you continue to do any of them, it’s going to increase the length of your total treatment time and, consequently, the cost as well. Don’t start your electrolysis journey until you can refrain from using any of these methods.
- Switch to these methods of hair removal instead: You can shave, dermaplane, trim with an electric/foil razor, clip with scissors in between treatments, or just let the hairs grow out the entire time if you prefer!
- Accutane: If you are currently taking or have recently taken Accutane, you can not get electrolysis. You need to be off Accutane for 6-12 months before starting electrolysis.
- Take before photos: It’s understandable to not want to document something that’s causing you to feel self conscious, but after making progress, most people say they wish that had taken photos when they first started. You are not required to take before photos, but it’s highly recommended for tracking progress!
Before Each Treatment
- Avoid products containing retinol: Do not use products that contain retinol for at least one week prior to your appointment on the area you are getting electrolysis on.
- Exfoliate: Gentle exfoliation the night before your treatment can help remove dead skin and create a more visible follicle opening. This step isn’t necessary but can be helpful if you are prone to ingrown hairs.
- Let the hairs grow: Your hairs need to be at minimum long enough to grab with tweezers. For most people in the beginning, this means letting the hairs grow for 3-5 days. For some people, it can take weeks, and for others, it could be 48 hours.
After the treatment
- Avoid Touching the Area: After treatment, your follicles are open and vulnerable for about 24-48 hours. During this time, it’s essential to keep the treatment area clean to minimize the risk of irritation and infection!
- Moisturize as Needed: Apply a gentle moisturizer, such as aloe vera or plain, unscented moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and soothe any discomfort. Avoid retinol for at least 3-5 days after your treatment.
- Avoid the following: Avoid direct sunlight exposure, excessive sweating (such as from exercise and saunas), pools and jacuzzis, as well as makeup (for facial hairs) and deodorant (for underarms) for 24-48 hours post-treatment to prevent irritation or infection.
- Avoid Picking Scabs: It’s crucial not to pick at any scabs that may form. Picking at scabs can lead to scarring and hyperpigmentation. Scabs are a normal part of the healing process and will resolve on their own with time.
